New York New Jersey is the biggest stage of the 2026 World Cup: the final takes place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, and the region hosts eight matches in total, more than any other venue area. For visiting fans, the region offers the world's most famous city combined with a stadium experience that demands careful planning. This guide covers the stadium, transport, accommodation and the city itself, so your trip to the tournament's climax goes smoothly.

MetLife Stadium, home of the NFL's Giants and Jets, becomes New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament and hosts the final on 19 July. With a capacity of over 82,000, it is the largest venue in the competition. The stadium sits in the Meadowlands sports complex in New Jersey, not in Manhattan, and there is no public parking on match days: the entire area operates under strict traffic controls. For the final, expect the most intense security and the biggest crowds of the tournament, and plan to arrive very early.

Public transport is the only sensible way to reach MetLife on match days. NJ Transit trains run from New York Penn Station via Secaucus Junction to the Meadowlands rail line, and dedicated shuttle buses depart from points across Manhattan. Match-day rail tickets are sold for specific time slots and sell out, so book as soon as they are available. Taxis and rideshares are possible but slow in match traffic, and you should allow at least three hours before kick-off if you choose the road. Download offline maps and keep your transport tickets saved on your phone.

Manhattan is the most convenient base but also the most expensive, with hotel rates surging during the tournament. Good alternatives include Jersey City and Hoboken, which offer quick transit links into Manhattan and to the stadium, and Brooklyn and Queens, which combine better value with lively neighbourhoods. Book months ahead, check cancellation terms, and be wary of suspiciously cheap short-term rentals during major events. Staying near a transit line matters more than staying near a landmark.

New York stages fan zones across all five boroughs, with big screens, food and events, so the city celebrates even on days without a match at MetLife. Between games, the classic New York experiences are all within reach: Central Park, the museums, Broadway, the High Line and the waterfronts of Brooklyn and Queens. The city is vast, so pick one or two neighbourhoods per day rather than trying to see everything. A New York CityPASS or similar bundle can save money on major attractions.

If you are attending the final, treat it as a full-day expedition: eat before you travel, carry only a regulation clear bag, keep your phone charged for your digital ticket, and agree a meeting point with your group in case networks fail. After the match, expect long waits for transport and consider lingering in the stadium area until the first crush clears. If you are watching the final in a fan zone instead, arrive early for a good spot and enjoy the company of fans from around the world: the final in New York is a global party, wherever you watch it.

New York New Jersey gives the World Cup its grandest finale: the biggest stadium, the most famous city and the largest crowds. Plan your transport early, choose your neighbourhood wisely and arrive with time to spare, and the final will be everything you hoped for.
