Sixteen cities across three countries will host the 2026 World Cup, and choosing where to base yourself is the single biggest decision of your trip. The host cities are thousands of kilometres apart, so chasing matches from coast to coast will burn your budget and your energy. This guide picks the best city for each kind of fan, and the practical rules that make a multi-city trip work.

Treat the tournament map as three separate trips. The East Coast cluster, New York and New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Miami, and Atlanta, is connected by short flights and rail. The Central cluster, Dallas, Houston, and Kansas City, is drivable in a day. The West Coast and Mexico, Los Angeles, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, Vancouver, Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, is a third trip entirely. Toronto sits apart in the east of Canada. Pick one region, see several matches there, and save the other regions for another tournament. Your wallet and your sleep schedule will thank you.

The final is at MetLife Stadium on July 19, and the New York and New Jersey area also hosts marquee group fixtures. If your trip is built around one unmissable match, this is the base. Expect the highest hotel prices and the biggest crowds, and book accommodation the moment your tickets are confirmed. Philadelphia and Boston are close enough for a second match without a flight, which softens the cost of staying in the region.

The tournament opens at the Estadio Banorte in Mexico City on June 11, and the city's football culture is unmatched: enormous crowds, street parties, and a stadium with more World Cup history than any other venue on the map. Miami is the other atmosphere pick, hosting the third-place match and drawing huge Latin American and Caribbean fan communities, with beaches between games. Both cities reward fans who want the tournament to feel like a festival, not just a fixture list.

Atlanta is the family pick: a retractable roof removes weather worries, the stadium sits downtown near major attractions, and the city is built for visitors. Kansas City and Houston are the budget picks, with lower hotel costs than the coastal cities and strong matchups, including Argentina's group games in Kansas City. For both kinds of traveller, the same rule applies: stay near public transport, because match-day traffic around every stadium will be heavy.

Canada hosts in just two cities, and they are a five-hour flight apart, so treat them as separate trips. Toronto offers the big-city experience, Canada's home opener, and easy international flights, with the stadium a short transit ride from downtown. Vancouver offers the most scenic match days in the tournament: a downtown stadium a two-minute walk from the SkyTrain, mountains and ocean nearby, and the mildest summer weather of any host city. Vancouver hosts more matches, Toronto hosts the bigger occasion. Choose based on what you value, not on a coin flip.

Book accommodation early and expect match-night prices to be far above normal rates. Use official fan festivals and watch zones if you cannot get a ticket; they are free, safe, and often the best atmosphere in the city. Check entry requirements before booking flights: most international fans need a US ESTA, a Canadian eTA, or both, and the two are separate authorisations. Finally, build rest days into the plan. A World Cup trip is a marathon, and the fans who enjoy it most are the ones who arrive at the big match rested, not exhausted from three cities in four days.
