Seattle is a dream host city for football fans: Lumen Field hosts six matches in the heart of downtown, the stadium is famous for its noise and atmosphere, and the city itself offers mountains, water, coffee culture and neighbourhoods that are a pleasure to explore. The challenges are cost and weather: Seattle hotels are expensive during major events, and summer days, while usually pleasant, can turn grey and drizzly without warning. Fans who book early and pack layers will have a superb trip.

Lumen Field sits immediately south of downtown, and the easiest way to reach it is by Link light rail to Stadium station, or on foot from downtown hotels, many of which are within a twenty-minute walk. Driving downtown on matchdays is not recommended, because parking is limited and expensive, and road closures around the stadium are common. Arrive at least two hours before kickoff, and check the bag policy in advance, as only small clear bags are permitted.

Lumen Field is renowned as one of the loudest stadiums in North America, thanks to its steep stands and partial roof, which traps noise and creates an intense atmosphere. Even upper-tier seats feel close to the action, and behind-goal sections are particularly loud. The stadium is open-air, so dress for the weather: Seattle summer evenings can be cool, and a light rain jacket is wise even on a sunny forecast. Food inside is good, with local favourites alongside standard options, but eat before the match to avoid queues and high prices.

Downtown Seattle is the most convenient base, with hotels near Pike Place Market, the waterfront and the stadium, while neighbourhoods like Capitol Hill and Belltown offer a livelier, more local feel with easy transit access. For better value, consider staying near a light rail station outside downtown, where hotels are cheaper and the journey to Lumen Field is still short. Book as early as possible, and prefer refundable rates if your match schedule is not yet confirmed, because Seattle's central hotel inventory is limited and prices rise sharply on match weeks.

Budget travellers should look at hostels and short-term rentals near transit, but read reviews carefully and confirm check-in arrangements for late arrivals after evening matches. Families may prefer apartments with a kitchen, which make multi-day stays more comfortable and economical. Whatever you choose, confirm your booking a week before travel and keep the address saved offline.

Seattle rewards slow exploration: Pike Place Market in the morning, the waterfront and the Seattle Aquarium, a ferry to Bainbridge Island for views back across the bay, and an afternoon in a neighbourhood coffee shop, because Seattle's coffee culture is a genuine attraction, not a cliche. The Museum of Pop Culture, the Space Needle and the Chihuly Garden and Glass are popular, but book tickets in advance during the tournament. For a full free day, a trip to Mount Rainier or the San Juan Islands is possible, but only if you have a genuine rest day between matches.

The official FIFA Fan Festival and city fan zones will run throughout the tournament, offering free big-screen viewing and a meeting point for international supporters. These are particularly good for solo travellers, because the shared experience of watching football with strangers who quickly become friends is one of the best parts of a World Cup trip.

Pack layers: a T-shirt, a fleece and a waterproof jacket cover almost every Seattle summer day, and comfortable walking shoes are essential, because the city is hilly and best explored on foot. A daily transit pass is good value if you are making multiple journeys, and the light rail also connects the airport to downtown, which is far quicker than a taxi in traffic. Keep your phone charged, download offline maps, and agree a meeting point with your group. With those basics covered, Seattle offers a World Cup experience that combines great football with one of America's most liveable cities.
