Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara hosts seven World Cup matches, including a quarter-final, but it is not in San Francisco itself: it sits about forty miles south of the city, in the heart of Silicon Valley, and that distance shapes every part of a Bay Area World Cup trip. Fans who assume they can walk from a San Francisco hotel to the stadium will be badly caught out. The good news is that the region has excellent transport options and two very different base cities, San Francisco and San Jose, each with its own appeal.

From San Jose, the journey is straightforward: VTA light rail and shuttle services connect downtown San Jose and nearby hotels to the stadium area, and the trip is short and manageable. From San Francisco, the journey is longer: Caltrain to Santa Clara or San Jose, followed by light rail or shuttle to the stadium, takes well over an hour, and on matchdays trains are crowded. Many fans choose to stay in San Jose or Santa Clara for match nights, and visit San Francisco on rest days, which is far more practical than commuting to every match from the city.

Driving is possible, with parking around the stadium, but it must be booked in advance and post-match traffic is heavy. Rideshares operate from designated zones, but expect long waits and surge pricing. Whatever your plan, arrive at least two hours before kickoff, and check the stadium bag policy in advance, as only small clear bags are permitted. Levi's Stadium is open-air, and Santa Clara summer afternoons are hot, so carry water, sunscreen and a hat for the walk, even though the stadium has shaded areas.

Levi's Stadium is a modern, open bowl with good sightlines throughout, and its most famous feature is its size: it is one of the larger stadiums in the tournament, with a capacity of around 68,500. Lower-bowl seats near the halfway line offer the best view, while upper-tier seats give a clear tactical overview. Behind-goal sections are the most atmospheric, particularly for fans who want to be part of the noise. The stadium is also known for its technology and food options, including local Bay Area favourites, though prices are at major-event levels, so eat before the match.

Heat is the main practical concern: afternoon matches in Santa Clara can be very warm, and sun exposure in open seats is significant. Choose shaded seats if you can, or bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, and drink water regularly. Evening matches are more comfortable, but temperatures can drop after sunset, so carry a light layer. Check your gate and section before arrival, because the stadium complex is large and walking between gates takes time.

San Francisco is one of the world's great visitor cities, and a rest day there is time well spent: the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, the Mission District and Alcatraz are all popular, but book Alcatraz tickets well in advance during the tournament. San Jose, by contrast, is quieter and more practical, with museums, restaurants and a pleasant downtown, and it is a better base for match nights. Many fans split their trip: San Jose for matches, San Francisco for sightseeing, which gives the best of both worlds.

The official FIFA Fan Festival and city fan zones will operate in the Bay Area throughout the tournament, offering free big-screen viewing for matches you do not attend. These are excellent for solo travellers and for fans who want to experience the tournament atmosphere without a stadium ticket. Public transport between San Francisco and San Jose is good but slow, so plan rest-day trips with generous time.

Your Bay Area checklist is simple: match ticket and ID, transport ticket or parking confirmation, a small approved bag, water and sun protection, and a charged phone with offline maps. Book accommodation early, because both San Francisco and San Jose are expensive during major events, and consider staying in Santa Clara or Sunnyvale for the best matchday value. With transport planned and heat respected, a Bay Area World Cup trip combines top-level football with two of California's most interesting cities.
