The 2026 FIFA World Cup schedule ran for 39 days, from the opening match on 11 June to the final on 19 July 2026, across 16 cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. It was the largest edition ever staged: 48 teams, 104 matches, three host nations, four time zones, and a format no fan had seen before. Most schedule pages dump all 104 fixtures in one list. This page gives you the structure first, then the dates that matter, then how it ended, which is what most people actually come back to check.

The stage-by-stage timeline is the skeleton everything else hangs on. Group stage: 11 to 27 June, with 72 matches as each of the 48 teams played three group games. Round of 32: 28 June to 3 July, the brand-new stage created by the 48-team expansion, with 16 matches. Round of 16: 4 to 7 July. Quarter-finals: 9 to 11 July. Semi-finals: 14 and 15 July, split between Atlanta and Dallas. Third-place match: 18 July. Final: 19 July at MetLife Stadium in New York and New Jersey, kicking off at 3pm Eastern time. Memorise those windows and you can place any match in the tournament without a fixture list.

The opening days set the tone. The tournament opened on Thursday 11 June at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, the first stadium in history to host matches at three World Cups, with Mexico against South Africa kicking off at 1pm local time. Mexico won 2-0. A day later, on 12 June, the other two co-hosts opened their campaigns: Canada against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto, and the United States against Paraguay in Los Angeles. The early group stage also produced the tournament's debutant stories: Curacao became the smallest nation ever to play at a World Cup, Cape Verde made their debut, Jordan played their first World Cup match, and Uzbekistan theirs, while Argentina began their title defence and Lionel Messi started his sixth World Cup campaign.

The group stage ended on 27 June, and the knockout rounds ran almost without pause from 28 June to the final. The new Round of 32 meant the champion had to survive eight matches rather than seven, and the extra round is the main reason the tournament stretched to 39 days. The quarter-finals on 9 to 11 July narrowed the field to four, the semi-finals on 14 and 15 July set the finalists, and the third-place match on 18 July saw England beat France.

The final, on Sunday 19 July at MetLife Stadium, was Spain against Argentina, and Spain won 1-0 after extra time. That result made Spain the champions of the first 48-team World Cup, at the end of a tournament that began with Mexico's 2-0 opening win in Mexico City and finished with Spain lifting the trophy in New York and New Jersey. In one line: 11 June to 19 July, 39 days, 104 matches, 16 cities, 48 teams, and a Spanish win in the final. That is the 2026 World Cup schedule, from the first whistle to the last.
