  • Overview: Mexico City hosts the World Cup 2026 opening match at the legendary Estadio Azteca. This guide covers the stadium, the altitude, and how to enjoy the capital....

Mexico City is where the 2026 World Cup begins, and its Estadio Azteca is the most historic stadium in the tournament: the only venue to host World Cup matches in three different editions, after 1970 and 1986, and the stage for two of the most famous finals in football history. For travelling fans, the Mexican capital offers an intoxicating mix of football passion, world-class food, ancient history and a city of more than 20 million people that treats the World Cup as a national celebration. This guide covers what to expect, from the altitude to the tacos.

Estadio Azteca, in the south of the city, holds more than 80,000 fans and has been modernised for the tournament while keeping its soul: a vast, steep bowl where the noise rolls down from the upper tiers and the crowd feels close to the pitch despite the size. It hosted the 1970 final, the 1986 final and the famous 'Game of the Century' and 'Hand of God' matches, and in 2026 it adds the opening match of the biggest World Cup ever. Arriving early is essential, both for security and for the pre-match street scene, where vendors, flags and songs turn the approach roads into a festival.

The stadium's surroundings are a matchday world of their own: food stalls selling tortas and tacos, merchandise sellers, and fans gathering hours before kickoff. Public transport, including the light rail line that serves the stadium area, is the best way in, since roads close and traffic builds for hours. Fans should plan the return journey too, since tens of thousands leave at once, and a post-match meal in a nearby restaurant while crowds thin is a popular strategy.

Mexico City sits at about 2,240 metres above sea level, and the altitude is the factor most visiting fans underestimate. The air is thinner, which means you may feel breathless climbing stairs, tire faster, and need more water than usual, especially in the first day or two. Arriving a day early helps, as does avoiding heavy alcohol on arrival, drinking water constantly, and taking the first day gently. Players feel it too, which is one reason Mexico has historically been so strong at home, and why visiting teams plan their acclimatisation carefully.

The climate adds another layer: June and July are the rainy season in Mexico City, with warm days, afternoon thunderstorms and cooler evenings. A light rain jacket and layers are essential, and the rain usually passes quickly, leaving fresh, clear air. Sunscreen matters despite the clouds, because the altitude intensifies UV, and a hat protects against both sun and sudden showers. Comfortable walking shoes are a must in a city where the best experiences are found on foot.

Beyond the stadium, Mexico City rewards exploration. The historic centre, with the Zócalo, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, is a UNESCO World Heritage site, while the canals of Xochimilco, the Frida Kahlo museum in Coyoacán, and the ancient pyramids of Teotihuacán, just outside the city, offer day trips that rival the football itself. Roma Norte and Condesa, with their cafes, bars and street art, are the neighbourhoods where visiting fans tend to base themselves, and the food scene, from street tacos to fine dining, is among the best in the world.

For fans, the advice is simple: arrive early, respect the altitude, eat everything, and let the city surprise you. Mexico City does not just host the World Cup, it embodies it, with a football culture that runs from street games to the Azteca's roaring tiers. The opening match will be watched by the world, but the days around it, spent exploring one of the great cities on earth, are what will make the trip unforgettable.
